Adansonia Digitata is commonly known as African Baobab or Kalpabriksha. It is a long lived tree. It can survive upto 2000 years. The trunk of the tree is typically very broad and fluted that may reach upto 10 to 15 diameters. A large baobab can store upto 130000 litters water in its trunk.
With their hard coat, baobab seeds can withstand drying and remain viable over long periods. The fruits are eaten by by many species. The fruit floats on water and the seeds are waterproof, so African Baobab may also be spread by water. The fruit, bark, roots and leaves are a key food source for many animals.
Germination Procedure:
- Soak the seeds in water for atleast 24 hours.
- Place the seeds on bed made of sand and cover it with a thin layer of sand.
- Sprinkle water over it and keep the bed or pot on semi-shade area.
- Germination may start within 10 to 15 days.
